But even when we, or an angel from heaven, preach any gospel to you than what we’ve preached to you, let him be accursed. — Galatians 1:8
Over time I’ve watched, with indignation and concern, the proliferation of inspirational speakers in pulpits. I have viewed just how many churches and preachers are changing the gospel of Jesus Christ with motivational speaking. I’ve watched how some of those preachers have also created mega churches and empires with this particular make of the “gospel.” But even worse, I Stephen Pierce seen how droves of men and women have now been fooled into believing that they’re finding provided the Bread of Life; i.e. the unadulterated gospel of Jesus Christ, being unsure of that they’re being offered inspirational speeches on a platter, spiced with scriptures.
But I am not as concerned with these motivational speakers in pulpits, as I am concerned about the spiritual wellness of the tens and thousands of persons participating their churches; and the a few million worldwide television people whose lives are being impacted by their teachings.
It is this matter for the spiritually powerless that has led me to present several of those preachers for who they really are; to warn you, the supporters and would-be fans of these preachers. I write to attentive the Body of Christ about any of it expansion in the Church; the danger of motivational speaking sold as the gospel; and to teach you how to recognize a inspirational speaker in the pulpit when you come across one; which I claim, however, that there are numerous out there.
So, let’s begin by pinpointing the 2 primary inspirational speakers in pulpits or what I call, “motivational preachers.” The 2 primary motivational preachers of our time are Pastor Joel Osteen of the New Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas and Bishop T.D. Jakes of the Potter’s House, Houston, Texas!
Surprised? Perhaps! Maybe not! Nevertheless, if you’re surprised to discover that these two are motivational preachers, probably it’s because they are your chosen preachers. Possibly, it’s since you’ve always believed them to be “E Good Ones.” Or maybe it’s because of their achievement, recognition, ministry size, followership, etc. or even due to the great they’ve performed in society. For example, Jakes’Person Thou Artwork Loosed book or jail outreach ministry. Or Osteen’s book, Your Most readily useful Living Now.
As individuals, we often attribute worldly success, excellent works, ministry size, acceptance, followership, etc. with godly success. Therefore, the larger a church, the very popular or successful a preacher, the more achievement we think an individual or business has. We also credit these achievements to God’s blessings. But worldly accomplishment, good operates, ministry measurement as well as large followership is certainly not the way of measuring godly success. A person can have each one of these, however maybe not be godly. As an example, Oprah Winfrey has all these features, yet somehow she is not just a preacher; neither may her achievement be looked at godly; due to what she espouses.
So we cannot pass by worldly achievement, great operates, acceptance, ministry measurement or even followership. In fact, T.D. Jakes in a CNN/TIME report was described as “Oprah-in-a-pulpit. But also for Winfrey’s universal spirituality, Jakes alternatives God.” That is to express that, if Oprah were to be a preacher, she’d probably have one of the largest churches on the planet! But thankfully, she has enough sense to stay in her lane (at least for now). So, every one of these features have nothing related to godly achievement!
But right before we search at why Joel Osteen and T.D. Jakes are inspirational preachers, let us first know what inspirational speaking is, the advantages of motivational talking and the risk of appearance motivational talking as the gospel.
Simply, inspirational talking can be an encouraging, beneficial speech; meant to encourage the fans to accomplish better and be greater in specific areas of their lives. In an expression, the inspirational speaker can be an encourager – i.e. the people’s cheer leader. He or she inspires people into action. Inspirational talking is situated mostly on psychological or human strength and maybe not God’s strength. It is exactly what a person can do in his or her own energy, as opposed to what Lord can perform through the individual in His strength.
